Airport Security

  Passenger Security Awareness Guidelines

The Aviation Community is hard at work to make your travel experience safe and with as little inconvenience as possible. The added requirements of safety and security will impose some new constraints. Your patience and cooperation with these changes will make the difference in how quickly the aviation industry recovers.

As of October 10, 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration has issued the following guidelines.

Preparing to travel:

Please note that airlines are allowing only one carry-on bag or backpack and one personal item (purse, briefcase, laptop, etc.) per passenger.

Items prohibited form aircraft cabins:

The following items must be transported in checked baggage or risk confiscation and possible questioning.
  • Knives of any length, composition or description.
  • Cutting instruments of any kind and composition, including carpet knives and box cutters (and spare blades), any device with a folding or retractable blade, ice picks, straight razors, metal scissors and metal nail files.
  • Corkscrews.
  • Baseball/softball bats.
  • Golf clubs.
  • Pool cues.
  • Ski poles.
  • Hockey sticks.
Items permitted in carry on baggage:
  • Walking canes and umbrellas (once inspected).
  • Nail clippers.
  • Safety razors.
  • Syringes (with documented proof of medical need).
  • Tweezers.
  • Eyelash curlers.
Wrapped gifts will have a high probability of being unwrapped and inspected. If possible, please place them in your checked baggage or leave them unwrapped should you decide to carry them through the security checkpoint.

Please limit the number and type of electronic equipment you carry with you. This includes cellular phones, pagers, laptop computers, CD players, electronic games, etc. The necessity of screening these items could create delays in your check-in.

Allow extra time:

The heightened security measures require more time to screen travelers. Airlines are suggesting arriving one hour prior to your flight. If you arrive 30 minutes prior to your flight, you will not be able to board the aircraft. Certain times of day may not be as busy and travelers may find it does not take as long as expected but it is better to be early than miss your flight.

Vehicles may be subject to search prior to parking or accessing the curbside. Please reduce the number and type of packages and equipment in your vehicle to those necessary for travel or road safety.

To encourage a continuous flow of vehicle traffic, parking restrictions are being strictly enforced. Unattended vehicles are prohibited at the curbside for any length of time. Individuals picking up travelers are encouraged to use the short-term parking lot to avoid circling the terminal and being subject to more than one vehicle search.

Check-in:

Government issued identification (federal, state, or local) is required. Travelers will be asked to show this ID at subsequent points along with their boarding passes.

E-ticket travelers not checking baggage must have proper documentation to proceed to the security checkpoint. Either an E-ticket itinerary card showing name, date of travel and more than one leg of the flight or a letter from a travel agency that contains the passenger's name, itinerary, and date of travel.

Screening Checkpoint:

Only ticketed passengers are allowed beyond the screening checkpoint. If a medical or parental need to accompany a ticketed passenger occurs, please check with your airline to determine how that may be possible.

All laptops must be removed from their case and x-rayed separately.

Be prepared to remove all metal items (change, foil wrapped gum/candy, keys, cell phones, wallets containing credit cards, etc.) from your pockets to be scanned. To speed up the process, these items should previously be placed in your purse, briefcase or bag to be scanned by the x-ray machine. Limit metal objects worn on person.

You may be asked to drink any beverage that is carried through the checkpoint.

At the Gate:

Be prepared to again present a valid photo identification card along with a boarding pass.

Some travelers and their bags will be required to participate in additional screening.

Remember - At all times:
  • DO NOT LEAVE BAGS UNATTENDED.

  • REPORT ANY UNATTENDED ITEMS IN THE AIRPORT OR AIRCRAFT TO THE NEAREST AIRPORT OR AIRLINE EMPLOYEE.

  • DO NOT CARRY ANYTHING ONBOARD THE AIRCRAFT FOR A PERSON UNKNOWN TO YOU.
