Athens Airport Update
Winter 2007

AHN WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) Approaches to be Published in 2008.

According to the FAA - Flight Procedures Office, WAAS approaches for AHN are scheduled to be published on April 8, 2008. Runway 27 is scheduled for the LPV precision approach and runways 9, 2 and 20 will have the non-precision LNAV. The system augments the Global Positioning System (or GPS) to provide the additional accuracy, integrity, and availability necessary to enable users to rely on GPS for all phases of flight, from en route through GLS approach for all qualified airports within the WAAS coverage area. Below is a link to the FAA's website with questions and answers about the WAAS system.

Project Updates
  • Ramp Renovation Project - This project is complete. It provides a new taxi lane to the north hangar area, has leveled the tie down area adjacent to the Flight Center and resurfaced/seal coated the transient ramp.

  • Runway 2/20 Rehabilitation - This project has been completed. The runway and taxiway B have been rejuvenated and have new markings.

  • Enhanced Taxiway Centerlines -Enhanced taxiway centerlines have been added to both taxiways. These are dashed lines on both sides of the taxiway centerlines starting 150' from the runway hold bars. These notify a pilot that they are approaching a runway hold area.

  • Runways Hold Sign Relocations - Please note that many of the runway hold bars and signs have been relocated to meet FAA standards. In most cases they were moved back away from the runway edges. New sign panels with black outlines of the numbers were also added.

  • Movement/Non Movement Markings - Three movement/non movement markings have been added and are located on taxiway A-3, A-4 and B-4. Please do not confuse these with runway hold markings which have two solid lines and two dashed lines. Movement area markings have one solid and one dashed line.

Airport Authority Meetings - Airport Authority meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at 3:30pm in the Athens Flight Center conference room. These meetings are open to the public and you are welcome to attend. These meetings are a good source of information concerning airport matters.
