Athens Airport Update
Winter - February 2003

Airport Projects Update - Check NOTAMS before flying.

First let me thank everyone for your patience as we are working on several projects at the same time. Not only do the projects keep the airport a mess, the weather has been everything but cooperative causing our projects to take a long time. Please be aware of construction equipment on the airport, as some of these workers do not have a lot of experience with airport operations. Watch for FOD and report any potential problems to operations so that they can take care of them. Again, thanks for your patience!

  • Runway 9/27 Rejuvenation - This project is about 90% complete. We are currently installing an automatic emergency generator, updated runway/taxiway signs and we have to finish painting the blast pads and taxiways.
  • General Aviation Terminal - Site prep. should start within the next two weeks. Bids have been received on the building and are being reviewed by the Airport Authority now. We hope to be in this building within the next year.
  • Water and Sanitary Sewer Lines - This project is moving along well. The lines have been installed in the area of the future commercial terminal (south of runway 9/27) and will be coming across the airport within the next couple of weeks. They will have to cut through the middle of the ramp, so be careful.
  • Terminal Re-roof - This project has been approved by the ACC Commission and is currently in the design phase. Plans are to completely re-roof the current commercial terminal.
  • T Hangars - This project is also progressing as well as the weather will allow. Slabs have been poured for the two executive hangars and they are framing for the slab of the t hangars. The buildings have been ordered and should be here within a month. Plans are to finish the hangars by the end of April.
  • Entrance Road and New Fire Station - These projects have been approved by ACC and are in the pre-design phases. We hope to have these underway sometime this summer/fall.

Air Traffic News
  • Congratulations to Chris Northrop, previous Tower Chief, who has taken a position with the FAA. Chris is currently in school in Oklahoma and will soon be assigned to Washington DC approach control. We wish him well. Bud Kirkland has been promoted to the position of Tower Chief and Darrell Chaisson to Asst. Chief. Bud and Darrell do a great job and we look forward to working with them.
  • Athens tower was recognized by headquarters of FAA Air Traffic for completing one year without any operational errors. We also commend them for a job well done!
  • Athens is one of three contract towers in GA to be receiving radar. Athens, Lawrenceville, and Cobb County will be receiving the radar systems. The FAA has already started installing the system and plans to have it fully operational this spring.
