Athens Airport Update
Summer 2003

General Aviation - Executive Terminal to Break Ground

If all goes well, the GA Terminal project will break ground the first week of August. The project was held up for about two months for re-bidding. The Initial bids came in over budget and after some minor changes, it was successfully re-bid. Reinicke Athens, Inc. (RAI) was the successful bidder and plans to have the building complete late spring/early summer 2004. A lot of thought went into this building to make it as useful as possible for all of our customers. To see the floor plans and elevations, please stop by the operations office.

Airport Projects Update - Check NOTAMS before flying.
  • Water and Sanitary Sewer Lines - Well, this project is moving along. The lines have been installed from highway 78 to the north side of the control tower. Work has now started in and around the car parking areas and Ben Epps Drive. Watch for detours and relocated parking areas.
  • Terminal Re-roof - Engineers are close to completing the design and plans for this project. We hope to bid the project in August, award the bid in September and start construction in October. After the roof is installed the exterior of the building will be painted, landscaped and new signs installed.
  • Commercial Terminal Renovations - The interior of the commercial terminal has been going through some renovations. New furniture, carpeting, cabinets, paint, lights, ceiling fans and a relocated vending area has helped to brighten it up. This will help to maintain the building until the new commercial facility can be built on the property that was purchased by SPLOST 2000 on highway 78.
  • T Hangars - Since our last newsletter we have completed the construction of the t-hangars. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on July 9th and all aircraft have moved in. We already have 25 persons on a new hangar waiting list and are in the initial talks of building additional hangars.
  • Entrance Road and New Fire Station - These projects have been approved by ACC and are in the pre-design phases. We hope to have these underway sometime this summer/fall.

Airport Web Site - If you haven't already, check out the airport web site at www.athensairport.net. The site has a lot of information pertaining to the airport such as a full copy of our master plan, economic impact, airport information and a 360 degree virtual tour of the control tower. Information on the site is updated on a monthly basis.

Airport Authority Meetings - Location Change - Due to the increased attendance at our airport authority meetings we have changed the meeting location to ACC Fire Station #7 on Barnett Shoals Road. This will allow adequate space to hold the meetings. We plan to continue the meetings there until our new GA terminal is completed sometime next summer. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 3:30pm.
