Airport Safety
Spring has arrived and with it comes increased air traffic and airport construction. As our weather improves many people are dusting off their airplanes and getting them back in the air. Many students start or increase their flying lessons in the spring. Along with the increased aircraft traffic we are also in the middle of several airport projects. Everyone should be vigilant to other aircraft and/or vehicles operating on the airport. Remember when operating a vehicle on the ramp, stay away from the taxiways and the airline ramp and aircraft always have the right-of-way.
Airport Projects Update - Check NOTAMS before flying.
- Fire Station - Our new fire station is starting to take shape. The structural steel is going up and they have started with the masonry. Soon the roof will be started and the exterior brick work will begin.
- Fire Truck - We have finished with the pre-construction meeting for the airport's new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle. The truck is being built by Rosenbauer Fire Apparatus in Wyoming, Minnesota and is scheduled for delivery this coming December.
- New Commercial Terminal - The SPLOST project schedule has been released and our new terminal is scheduled for 2010/2011. This seems like a long time, but we plan to start with the new taxiways, ramps, and entrance roads between now and then. By 2010 we hope to be ready for the building to be built, which will be the last step of this project.
- Athens Turboprop Maintenance - ATP continues work on their new maintenance hangar. Currently they are in the site preparation phase and will soon be ready to begin the foundation.
New IFR Procedures Class - Tower personnel along with Atlanta Approach control will host a class on the new IFR procedures and transition for the Athens Airport. The class will be held at 120 Dougherty Street, ACC Planning Department Conference Room, April 29, 2005, 1:00pm. All local pilots are invited and encouraged to attend.
Airport Security - As part of the new entrance road project, new code gates will be installed. In an effort to increase airport security, the new gates will be card activated. The cards will only be issued to those with an operational need to access the ramp/hangar area. In order to receive a key card, one must attend a safety class offered by the airport. Additional information on this subject will be forthcoming.
REMEMBER THE MAXIMUM RAMP SPEED FOR VEHICLES IS 15 MPH!
