Athens Airport Update
Fall 2006

Football Air Traffic is Here!

Temperatures are starting to drop and football traffic has begun. The UGA vs Western Kentucky game brought over 40 aircraft to AHN and the bigger the game, the more traffic we can expect. This year UGA plays Tennessee in Athens, which will bring 100 - 125 aircraft to AHN. Traffic includes small Cessna 172's up to Canadair Regional Jets. Please plan your flying in advance during this time of year, as game days may not be conducive to flight training activities. Otherwise, happy flying and Go Dawgs!

Airport Projects Update - Check NOTAMS before flying.
  • Ramp Renovation Project - No bids were received for the ramp renovation project, so the project will be re-bid during the winter months with a new start date this spring. The GA-Dot has just let many large projects and asphalt companies are busy with those and did not have the time or resources to bid smaller projects such as this one.

  • New Hangars - The airport has plans to construct four new executive type hangars on the west side of the airport. The hangars will be large enough to house twin turbine aircraft such as King Air's and Citation Jets. The Airport Authority is also discussing the possibility of building a row of smaller t-hangars. The small hangars would be located on the East Side of the airport near the "C" hangar row. If you are interested in leasing a hangar, please contact Dan at 706-613-3420 and ask to be put on the hangar waiting list.

Athens-Ben Epps Scores 100% - For the third consecutive year, the Athens-Ben Epps Airport scored a perfect 100% on its annual Safety and Certification inspection conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration. The inspection lasts for two days and includes one night inspection. The purpose of the inspection is to maintain our classification as a commercial airport. The inspection includes administrative as well as a field inspection. Congratulations to the operations staff for a job well done.

New Voice in the Tower - Many of you may have been missing Amy's voice in the tower. Well, she was hired by the FAA and is now a controller in the tower at Charlotte International. As her replacement, we welcome Mike Dean to the Athens tower. Mike is retired US Navy and transferred here from the Gwinnett County tower. Help us in welcoming Mike to the Athens team!

Civil Air Patrol Joins AHN - The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has started an Athens Squadron. They will be known as the Bulldogs and operate in association with the Winder Squadron. The CAP is an auxiliary of the US Air Force and assists in search and rescue of missing aircraft and special events such as airshows. For more information please see http://gawg.cap.gov/GA156/. Welcome CAP Bulldogs!
