Airport Loses A Fellow Aviator and Friend Bob Burton passed away recently after a long illness. Bob flew from the Athens Airport for many years. From flying power line patrol to serving as "Air Boss" for the Athens Airshows, aviation was a major part of his life. Bob's spirit will live on at the Athens Airport. A sitting area overlooking the ramp/runway has been donated to the airport in honor of Bob. Athens Ben Epps Flight Center - Open House Make plans to stop by for the Athens Flight Center's Open House on October 13th from 11:00am - 3:00pm. This is a drop in, come as you are event. Enjoy a hotdog and soft drink while touring the new facility. Staff will be on hand to show you around. Tour the building, see some airplanes, and have a good time. Friends and family welcome. Airport Scores a Perfect 100 The airport normally does well on its annual FAA safety and certification inspection, but this year scored a perfect 100. The 2 day inspection is required for all commercial airports and consists of an in-briefing, inspection of airport files/logs, an airfield day/night inspection, fuel facilities inspection, airport rescue response drill and post briefing. Thank you to everyone that uses the airport as it takes an effort from all of us to keep this airport operating properly. A reminder for vehicles that have to operate on the airport: Vehicles
Airport Projects Road and Parking Lots - This project will build a new loop road and car parking facilities throughout the terminal/FBO area. We are making some final adjustments and should have this contract done ASAP. We hope to start construction in October. Fire Station - The new station will be built on the East Side of the control tower. It will be a two bay station with offices and storage areas. The status of this project is the same as the road project. Fire Truck - The request for proposals (RFP) for this project should be done in October. The new vehicle will be larger in size to accommodate the needs of regional jets that now frequent our airport during fall/winter. The truck should arrive in the summer of 2005. Environmental Assessments - We are presently conducting environmental assessments (EA's) for a possible runway extension to 9/27. The EA's look at how the extensions will impact the environment and also give us several options on how to extend the runway. Also included is an EA for the new commercial terminal on Lexington Rd. The EA's should be completed this Feb/Mar. |
